Choices after sixth form or college

Your choices after you leave sixth form or college.

After a 2 year course in sixth form or college, for example A levels or extended diploma you can choose:

  • higher education courses at various levels at university or college - UCAS has more details
  • apprenticeships at various levels - find an apprenticeship or visit UCAS
  • employment - competition is strong and what is available varies - explore Not Going to Uni and have a backup plan
  • gap years - there is a huge variety of activities that you could pursue
  • further education - a small number of students will continue their studies at this level before moving onto university
  • volunteering - find out about volunteering in Derbyshire or visit Do-it for more information

After a 1 year course in year 12 you can choose:

  • further study at college or sixth form apprenticeships at various levels - find an apprenticeship
  • traineeships or study programs
  • part-time education or training if you're employed, self-employed or volunteering for more than 20 hours a week
